语言文字是人类获取知识、传承文明的重要途径，语言文字的使用也是人类最独特、最复杂的认知活动。国际上近年来陆续将语言的脑机制、“语言脑”的发育、语言障碍的诊断与矫治等课题列为重大脑科学计划的重点。语言研究又是一个高度学科交叉的领域，尤其需要社会科学和自然科学的交叉与融合。
本书集理论构建和实证研究于一体，结合中文独特的语言学特性，将语义加工分为语义提取与整合两个基本认知成分，采用不同的研究技术和范式，从时空的视角对语义加工的进程和独特神经通路进行探索，构建了语义加工的双通路神经模型。这些创新性的探索，为未来思考怎样结合中文的特性构建兼具语言普适性和特异性的语言认知理论提供了重要思路。
